When I first learned to improvise, I learned the scales. I knew which scale went with which chord. I practiced the patterns. I played them over the changes.

And it didn't sound like jazz . 😢

Because knowing which notes can work is only the beginning.

How do you phrase them? Which note choices can make a line really strong? How can a familiar major scale suddenly become a modal sound, a vamp or a beautiful quartal voicing? What are the musicians on the original recording actually playing — and why does it sound so good?

Listen. Investigate. Take things apart. 

And then use what you discover as building blocks for your own playing.

The goal isn't to give you more material to memorize. It's to give you new ideas and new ways of working with material you may already know.

3. Take the deep dive
Watch the complete 40–45 minute webinar and work through the accompanying workbook: harmony, scales, form, voicings, improvisational concepts and ideas to explore.

4. Study the solo etude
Play along with a complete improvised chorus, with notation and TAB. Take it apart, explore the phrasing and concepts — then use what speaks to you in your own playing.

5. Listen again
