why do some people sound so much better than others ?

because : knowing the right scale is only

the beginning.

When I first learned to improvise, I learned the scales. I knew which scale went with which chord. I practiced the patterns. I played them over the changes.

And it didn't sound like jazz . 😢

Because knowing which notes can work is only the beginning.

How do you phrase them? Which note choices can make a line really strong? How can a familiar major scale suddenly become a modal sound, a vamp or a beautiful quartal voicing? What are the musicians on the original recording actually playing — and why does it sound so good?

Listen. Investigate. Take things apart.

And then use what you discover as building blocks for your own playing.

The goal isn't to give you more material to memorize. It's to give you new ideas and new ways of working with material you may already know.

INTRODUCING : A DEEP DIVE INTO MODERN JAZZ WITH HERBIE HANCOCK

CANTALOUPE ISLAND

 start with a groove :)

Start with one of Herbie's most iconic grooves and discover how much you can do with seemingly simple material.

Learn the chords and build an accompaniment, explore Dorian sounds and create your own modal vamps. Then we'll dig into phrases from Herbie Hancock and Freddie Hubbard to see how great players turn these sounds into musical ideas.

Explore:
Dorian sounds · modal vamps · scale patterns · phrasing · color notes · Herbie & Freddie Hubbard language

MAIDEN VOYAGE

 Go deeper into modal harmony

What can you do when the harmony stays on one sound for several bars — without your improvisation turning into a scale exercise?

Explore sus chords, Dorian and Mixolydian sounds, quartal voicings and the beautiful colors hidden inside familiar scales. We'll also look at how bebop language can work inside a modal tune.

Explore:
Sus chords · modal colors · quartal harmony · phrasing · bebop language · building your own voicings

DOLPHIN DANCE

Navigate complex harmony

A beautiful — and much more challenging — composition.

Instead of treating every chord as a new problem, we'll look for key centers, chord families, pedal points and larger harmonic chunks. You'll learn how to navigate the unusual form, choose sounds for difficult passages and develop a practical way to work on a complex tune without getting overwhelmed.

Explore:
Key centers · chord families · pedal points · harmonic rhythm · form · scale choices · practice strategies

From Noodling To Making Musical Choices.

The goal isn't to play more notes or memorize more scales.

It's to know where you are in the form, hear how the harmony is organized and have ideas you can actually explore.

Instead of reacting to every chord symbol as a new problem, you'll start to recognize larger harmonic chunks and familiar relationships.

Instead of simply running the “correct” scale, you can make choices: explore a particular sound, work with a rhythmic or melodic idea, try a different voicing, borrow a concept from a great solo — and hear what happens.

And when you encounter the next difficult tune, you'll have something even more useful:

a way to work on it.

“Listening is not the warm-up for the practice. It is the practice.”

Three Tunes. Three Complete Courses.

Each tune follows the same path — from listening and understanding to playing, experimenting and making the material your own.

1. Start with listening
Explore the original recording and other interpretations. Get the sound and form into your ears before worrying about theory.

2. Learn the accompaniment
Learn the chords slowly with video, notation and TAB — then record your own loop and use it for your practice.

3. Take the deep dive
Watch the complete 40–45 minute webinar and work through the accompanying workbook: harmony, scales, form, voicings, improvisational concepts and ideas to explore.

4. Study the solo etude
Play along with a complete improvised chorus, with notation and TAB. Take it apart, explore the phrasing and concepts — then use what speaks to you in your own playing.

5. Listen again
Return to the recordings after you've spent time with the tune. Hear what you couldn't hear before.

  • You love jazz and want to go deeper into the music
  • You know your major scales, pentatonics and basic jazz chords, but aren't always sure how to turn that knowledge into music
  • You can play a tune like Autumn Leaves and are ready to explore more modern harmony
  • You sometimes find yourself noodling over jam tracks and want a more focused way to practice

  • You enjoy listening, investigating and experimenting

This probably isn't for you if…

  • You're completely new to jazz guitar
  • You don't yet know the major scale or basic chord shapes
